Choosing a Plan
The American Association of Health Plans has put together the following information in order to assist consumers in choosing a health plan.
How to Choose a Health Plan
In comparing health plans, one of the most important steps is to assemble as much useful information as possible. When gathering information, don't forget that information is available from many sources and in many forms, including:
- Ask your employer/fellow employees for information on their experience with different health plans.
- Ask health plans to provide copies of new member guides in addition to pre-enrollment promotional materials.
- Ask friends and coworkers for specific reasons why they're satisfied or dissatisfied with their present or former plans.
- Contact business and consumer groups that survey or monitor health plans' performance.
- Contact state insurance, public health, or consumer affairs agencies.
- Contact accreditation agencies like the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA), the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO), or The American Accreditation Healthcare Commission/URAC for the status of plans you're comparing.
- Contact insurance brokers/agents for information & options on health care coverage
In addition to the above resources, each health plan has its own member handbook. You may find answers to many of your questions in these handbooks.
